Dr. Edwards is chief of the division of pain medicine at Vanderbilt. His approach to the treatment of pain and the opioid epidemic is to use the best evidence where available and to assist in the generation of evidence where it is not. Dr. Edwards collaborates with Dr. Ranapurwala on the epidemiology of the opioid epidemic as measured through big data at Vanderbilt, UNC, and Duke as well as the departments of health of each state. The effect of state laws on prescribing and opioid-related deaths is an outcome of interest in their research.
