Dr. Guan is a professor in the department of anesthesiology and department of neurological surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also serves as the director of pain research core and director of pain neuromodulation research at the Johns Hopkins University. The long-term goal of his research is to elucidate the spinal and peripheral neuronal mechanisms of chronic pain and develop better strategies and novel targets for the treatment of chronic pain. Major areas of research include mechanistic study of neurostimulation for pain treatment, developing novel analgesics for chronic pain, and new strategies to improve peripheral opioid analgesia. Dr. Guan has been leading an internationally recognized pain research group that has been funded by the NIH and industry. We have been successful in garnering substantial NIH and industry support.
